When Au Lycée Papillon was created in 1936, Georgius envisioned the song as a true musical sketch. He encouraged performers to switch props depending on the character to enhance the comedic effect: schoolboy caps, dunce hats, inspector’s glasses… anything that added theatrical flair.

A typical staging involved turning each musician into a student, with the conductor playing the role of a stern inspector. The chorus, sung in a circle around the “inspector,” transformed the performance into a little burlesque scene, hugely popular in Parisian brasseries and dance halls.

This playful and interactive setup helped make the song a popular success, going beyond music to become part of live performance art. It became a classic of the French music-hall, often revived with humorous and creative variations.
